Heidi A. Katz & Maryam T. Brotine presented “Legal Issues in Clinical Education” at the Clinical Faculty Academy, put on by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council.

Heidi A. Katz & Maryam T .Brotine presented “Legal Issues in Clinical Education” at the Clinical Faculty Academy, put on by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. The focus of the presentation was to familiarize participants with basic legal principals applicable to clinical faculty and instruction in efforts to empower clinical faculty to exercise professional judgment and reduce legal and professional risks in the clinical environment.

Ms. Katz spoke on tort law and constitutional law, including due process, academic dismissal versus misconduct, equal protection and discrimination. Ms. Brotine addressed student issues, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and the allocation of risks through affiliation agreements.

The academy was held on August 5, 2010 at West Suburban College of Nursing in Oak Park, IL.
