Practice Areas: Real Estate Tax Assessment

Fred Lane litigates on behalf of school districts and other local governmental taxing bodies in high stakes tax assessment proceedings with particular emphasis on advocating for the equitable valuation of nuclear and fossil fuel power plants that comprise vital components of the tax base in a significant number of Illinois school districts. Fred possesses 40 years of trial, appellate, and administrative agency experience and has litigated before the Property Tax Appeal Board, the Circuit Court of many Illinois counties, the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Appellate Judicial Districts of Illinois, and the Supreme Court of Illinois.

He has done federal, state and local tax work for companies including Northwest Airlines, MCI Communications and Citicorp, and also has served as special counsel to the Illinois Director of Revenue on telecommunications tax issues. For more than 20 years, he has handled extensive trial and dispute resolution matters for McDonald's, its founder Ray Kroc, as well as for Arthur Rubloff.

Prior to his affiliation with Robbins, Schwartz, Lane was a partner with Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal for over 30 years. He handled major complex litigation matters as a member of Sonnenschein's Litigation and Business Regulation Practice Group.

In 1975, he founded and continues to serve as legal counsel to Faircom, a statewide consortium of Illinois taxing bodies that lobbies for fair assessment of electric power generation facilities.

In 2004, Fred was reappointed to the Illinois State Bar Association's State and Local Taxation Section Council and to its PTAB/Board of Review Subcommittee. He also was recognized by his peers as being in the top 5 percent of Illinois attorneys in a survey by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company and listed in LeadingLawyers.com.

Fred has served as a faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA), teaching negotiations and mediation. He also formed the original NITA trial practice program at Sonnenschein. Among many other professional and civic involvements, he counts membership on the Chicago Bar Association's Entertainment Committee (1977-1992; Chair, 1987) and membership on the Advisory Council of the Theatre School of DePaul University (1980-1999) of which he was a founding member in 1980 and Vice Chairman from 1980-1993. Fred is a life Director of Temple Sholom of Chicago (President, 1985-1987). In addition, he has been heavily involved with the Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, serving as a member of the Board of Governors (1984-present; Vice Chairman, 1997-present), Chairman of the Committee on Academic and Faculty Affairs (1997-present), and Chairman of the Presidential Search Committee (2001).

Fred lives in Chicago with his wife, Jeanie Pollack. Jeanie is a kinesiologist who designs job specific exercises to avoid repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. He has three children, Russel, Beth, and Jennifer, and seven grandchildren. He is an avid biker and tennis player, and was elected a member of the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame.
